About Him

Nagathihalli Chandrashekar hails from a small village, Nagathihalli, in the south Indian state of Karnataka. Having grown up on a staple diet of Kannada (the language of the state) literature and art, he is today one of the top names in the field. Chandrashekar started his career as a professor of Kannada and has authored several works of fiction. With an incessant passion for telling stories, he naturally progressed to do so through the medium of cinema.

Today, Chandrashekar is a renowned filmmaker and has several award winning films to his credit. A quintessential intellectual, he is one of the few auteurs of cinema who believes in cinema as a cultural and creative phenomenon, in deference to the popular notion of cinema in India as just a mass entertainment medium.

Chandrashekar has added another first in his long list of achievements as the first Kannada filmmaker to promote his film at the prestigious 2007 Cannes Film Festival. The film ‘Mathad Mathadu Mallige’ which is a reflection of events taking place across India, has marked a place for the Kannada film industry on the world map of cinema.
